Knowledge of the history, culture, language and customs of the Hebrew people is simply not optional. This Bible has everything it needs in that department. The names are written as transliterations of the original Hebrew, a commentary to ellucidate several details, sections that break up the text to give historical/cultural context and many many references to Jewish commentaries throughout history. If you are looking to understand God's Word this book should be in your library.

As an on-again-off-again practicing Christian I have struggled with trying to get a better understanding of Jesus. With a copy of the Bible in Aramaic-English and this translation from Hebrew I continue to learn about the daily routines that he and disciples experienced and the nuances of the languages they spoke. Both books help me in getting a better understanding of Christianity's roots and finding answers to my questions. This book, especially, provides great illustrations, side notes, and information to invigorate my thoughts.

In recent years, several major Study Bible projects surfaced and released with mixed reception. One of the latest additions to this Study Bible market, and one that promises a wealth of useful insight into the Scriptures is the newly published The Complete Jewish Study Bible (CJSB).The CJSB is a unique Study Bible experience that seeks to submerge the reader into the Jewishness of both Testaments through fresh and relevant study notes and articles selected to accomplish this mission. The CJSB is based on the widely used Complete Jewish Bible (CJB) by David A. Stern. Those familiar with the CJB will know what to expect. Stern has translated the Bible with a particular sensitivity to the Jewish tradition and thus has retained Jewish names and words with theological significance. For example, the reader will discover thousands of occurrences in both the Old and New Testament of Adonai where the Hebrew and Greek would not warrant such translation, but the Hebraic tradition would (xlii-xliii). Readers will surely have a personal preference and opinion towards this decision and others like it, and further comment is beyond the scope of this review.The CJSB prepares the reader for “extensive bottom-of-page study notes to help readers understand the deeper meanings behind the Jewish text” (xix). However, for most readers (and especially those familiar with other Study Bibles on the market) this statement will over promise and under deliver. Many pages lack any presence of study notes. The notes are certainly helpful and useful for understanding the deeper meaning of the text, but they are not “extensive” by any meaningful definition of the word. I do not say this to discourage the reader away from the benefit of the CJSB, but rather to prepare them for the content therein. Still, the benefit of the CJSB is found in the numerous, and I mean numerous topical and themed articles. The topical articles cover a wide range of topics in both the Old Testament and the New, including the nature of covenant, millennialism and the future Israel, Satan in Jewish thought, a Jewish understanding of Hell, and much, much more. The themed articles are abundant and sorted under twelve major themes: (1) anti-Jewish scriptural interpretation, (2) covenants, (3) Jewish customs, (4) Jewish-Gentile relations, (5) messianic prophecy, (6) the names of God, (7) Sabbath, (8) salvation and atonement, (9) the holy days of Israel, (10) the land of Israel, (11) Torah, and (12) the tabernacle. The CJSB opens with a lengthy introduction the CJB and closes with a number of appendix material (e.g. glossary of Hebrew words, topical and theme article index, biographies of rabbis and sages, etc.) and eight full-color maps.The CJSB is a unique Study Bible and a valuable investment for anyone interested in better understanding the Jewishness of the Old and New Testament. The articles are useful and many, and the CJB is an excellent supplemental translation to your Bible of choice. However, while I was honestly pleased by content that the CJSB offered, for some reason, I continued to feel as though something was missing. It could be the lack of “extensive” notes that I was anticipating or that they were paired with the CJB—a supplemental translation choice, in my honest opinion. Despite this, I was surprised at how often I was reaching for the CJSB to see what the contributors had to say about a passage or topic and I was pleased by the content and number of articles.The Complete Jewish Study Bible is a welcomed addition to the Study Bible market. The CJSB offers an unparalleled experience that will truly enrich the reader’s understanding of the Scriptures. If anything, I think that it is safe to assume that the CJSB will provide another perspective for the reader to weigh as they seek to resemble and serve Jesus in the twenty-first century. I said it before, and I will say it again, the CJSB is a unique Study Bible and a valuable investment for anyone interested in better understanding the Jewishness of the Old and New Testament. It's really nice to have a Bible that teaches me about the Jewish culture and original Hebrew language! Feels like I'm getting an accurate understanding of what the words really mean. The notes are great and very in depth. For me personally, I feel like the translation itself is a little too modern and paraphrased sometimes. I feel like I'm reading the Message or NLT at times. With that said, I still love it and will use it for study.

Well when I read "error made by ALL major English versions" "and MOST commentators" in regards to a verse. Or "that was for Israel" only.. some times. And when you your self look into this.... its the classic "I am right your wrong". This book is for the WORLD.. God came to save the WORLD! Its not a JEWISH GOD.. when you make Jesus your lord as the word says you have a new spirit. It says.. there is no more Jew no gentile no slave no free. Its ONE body and Christ is the head.I love this bible but now I wonder if some verses are not worded their way of thinking not what is written.

Really enjoy this version. Similar to ESV, but translation directly from Hebrew to English has some subtle differences. Very conversational and clear.

It gives you the Jewish perspective straight from the Bible, without any Christian biest noncence, and strait from the Jewish perspective, without any Christian antisemitism/and no Christian/gentile pollution. Plus it gives you the Jewish translations!

As a Christian, I am always looking for new ways to learn more and more about Israel and the Jewish beliefs. This Bible is an excellent translation for that purpose. I would like to see more study notes, as my learning comes mostly from them. I have only read through Exodus thus far, so I anticipate more and more help in my quest. Also, as an author my self, I am constantly researching information for my Old Testament writings.

We are big Leslie Patricelli fans in my household. My two year-old twin boys and four year-old daughter love her books. While the illustrations are definitely a big draw for us, we like the dialog, too. This book, however, basically only has two words in it: "no" and "yes". "No no" and "Yes yes" are the only words until the last two pages that just list more "no no" and "yes yes" things. This book is more about the pictures than the words for that reason. Still cute pictures and fun lessons for kids, but I prefer more exposure to language in the books we read to our kids regularly.

I like her books, but this one, while cute like the rest, gives me mixed feelings, On all of the pages where the baby is doing a "no no", the baby looks thrilled, like it's having the time of it's life. On the "yes yes" pages the baby looks happy. So it seems like it doesn't give enough of a visual emotion to show the young reader what is a no no or yes yes.

I love Leslie Patricelli books in general but I wish this one didn't have the baby smiling when it was doing something wrong.

This is a great book for teaching toddlers appropriate behaviors while keeping it fun and cute. My son has it memorized now and he will say, "No, no - it's not nice to pull the cat's tail. But, yes yes, I can pet the kitty softly." Or, "No, no, coloring on the wall, but yes yes coloring on paper." It sounds simple, but when my son saw it in such a fun way with the cute little drawings, he really took to it. I've never had a problem with him wasting tons of toilet paper or coloring on walls and part of me thinks its because of this simple book. (Not that he's perfect, he has his trouble-maker times, too!). Anyway, it's such a helpful book, I would definitely buy this for a child's first or 2nd birthday.

I learned this through experience with my 5 children! I would read this to my first couple babies then coming toddlers and I never had a problem with any of these situations in the book, like I had seen other toddlers having. I’d say I only experienced a couple of them once or twice. It was always naturally reiterated during reading time at bedtime with this book. Although I didn’t know it was because of this book, yet. I never paid attention because it was never a problem. Well then years went on and we continued to have kids. My 3rd child started doing these things mentioned, and then my 4th child (2 yrs apart). It was different and becoming a problem. I was reflecting back, why were they doing it so much when their older siblings didn’t. Then I remembered this book and that I hadn’t been reading it to them so I decided I would try and see. I started and what do you know, very quickly those incidences were becoming fewer and then stopped completely! They would even correct themselves during the reading of this book. They would tell me this was a no no and this was a yes yes. Repetition is everything! We read it almost every night. It was one of our favorites. I would say “no no baby we don’t ..., yes yes baby we do... good baby.” To note, I would never tell my child he was like the baby doing the no no. That way my child was part of the teaching the baby to do the right thing. It was directed at the baby in the book, never my child.I now give this to every friend who is pregnant about to have a baby!

Got this for my little boy - it's an adorable book! I guess my only negative comment is that the little guy is smiling while he's doing these naughty things, and as weird as it sounds, it was kind of suggestive to my 19 month old. He'd never thought of playing with toilet paper until we read this book. Even though it's a NO-NO in the book, the baby pictured seems to be having a ball.I don't know, maybe it's just me... But it's something I noticed.

My toddler adores this book. Contrary to some of the fears expressed in other reviews, it did not give my son a list of "no-no"s to try and it did not encourage him to use "no" more. In fact, it introduced "yes yes" to his vocabulary. He loves to have me "catch" him doing the right thing so he can say "Yes! Yes!" and clap for himself. It hasn't done much to change some of his no-nos, but he loves to read the book and laugh at the funny pictures which is about all I think you can realistically ask from a board book anyway.

GURPS Illuminati is a pretty good resource for anybody planning a game with lots of conspiracy or secret society elements. The book has lots of "facts" and details about various secret societies and conspiracy theories from the almost plausible to the completely silly. The overall tone of the Illuminati setting is meant to be humorous and the authors of the book succeed in that respect. Some of the artwork is also very funny. My major complaint with the product is that it is mostly a setting book and contained very few new rules or new options for character creation.

I have always been a fan of conspiracy theory and gaming. There is no better book available for bringing the darkness of the conspiracy into the world of RPG's. Whether you believe or not, this book contains the best. Even the cover gives you a "glimmering" of what's inside. If you want to play "X-Files" style campaigns, this book has my very highest recommendations. If you want to bring a little "light" into this type of campaign, try GURPS IOU.

I found this book disappointing. It had very little hard, practical advice on HOW to GM a conspiracy type game - such as how do you plot it out? How do you gradually reveal the conspiracy to the players, how do you keep them guessing and intrigued?It was also heavily padded with large, badly-drawn 'illustrations' that added nothing to the information, or to the 'feel' of the game. The space could have been much more usefully employed fleshing out the mechanics of running the game.

This book's a fun read and "chock full of" Illuminati information, but the art is taken directly off the INWO cards, and few guidelines are given to GMs who are not already experienced in subterfuge. Long-running non-fantasy campaigns that could use a "something lurking in the background" could benefit from this book.

No wonder Dahl wrote such wonderfully awful characters as Ms. Trunchbull (sp?)--he had real-life inspiration! I read his account of getting his tonsils out to my 6th grade students each year to sell them on this book: with no anesthetic, his doctor said, "Open your mouth," and when Dahl did, he darted in with a scalpel and snick-snick, Dahl spit out two globs of flesh and a lot of blood. Well-ah, a tonsillectomy! And the scene of his sister taking the family for a drive in their first car! Oh my god! She didn't know how to turn it or stop it, but she let the little kids persuade her to go faster and faster! Bones are broken! It's nuts! And his teachers. Wow. Corporal punishment with a cane. I like to read the description of being whipped with a cane to my 6th graders when they complain about how strict we are on them so they can realize how good they actually have it. They're so aghast that they argue over who gets to read the whole book. Music to my ears.

Real life good reading. Funny, Compulsive, Driving, Observant. Dahl's own story. I just kept reading and enjoying it. Almost like a book in two parts but he joins them well. One springs from within another. This man knows how to write. I was so grateful to find this book so well written and edited. Not an easy combo to find these days. Excellent, and I don't say that lightly.

Fine book; excellent writing. This is the personal tale of a master storyteller with experiences that are ordinary, yet extraordinary. As a young man working in Africa, Dahl signs up for the air corps and finds himself flying planes he was never taught to fly in battles that were never planned to be. What is most exciting about this book is that real life is more dramatic than anything that a fiction writer could dream up. It is one of the top five books I have read this year, and would highly recommend it to anyone with a sense of adventure. It is hard to portray what it's like to be up there in a Hurricane with enemy fighters after you, but Dahl does it with aplomb. I will wait a while and read this one again!

Another writer once told me that one of the most important elements to be found in a memoir is a "likeable" narrator. Roald Dahl is perhaps one of the MOST likeable of narrators. Modest to a fault and blessed with a very sly and subtle sense of humor, the story Dahl tells in GOING SOLO, his sequel to BOY, is perhaps one of the most readable memoirs of modern times. His story of the quick and almost informal training he received at a flying school in Africa shortly after Great Britain entered WWII, is hair-raising and nearly impossible to believe, except you do believe, because you trust this man. At six foot six inches tall, Dahl was physically quite unsuited to be a fighter pilot, noting that when seated in the various planes he flew, his knees were nearly under his chin and he had to hunch over to fit beneath the plane's canopy. But fly he did, even after surviving one horrific crash in the desert early on in his career as an RAF pilot. He sustained a very bad concussion (which was to come back to haunt him and finally "invalid" him out of service nearly two years later) and had his face bashed in. As he explained to his mother in a letter: "My nose was bashed in ... and the ear nose and throat man pulled my nose out of the back of my head and shaped it and now it looks just as before except that it's a little bent about ..." Dahl went on to fly many combat missions in North Africa and Greece, usually against vastly superior odds, but somehow he managed to survive until the middle of 1941, when the migraine headaches caused by the aforementioned crash made him unfit for further flying. Dahl's nearly laconic and completely unself-conscious manner of writing about the things he did - absolutely heroic things - made me think of Sam Hynes's WWII memoir of his missions in the Pacific theater. Both writers downplay the importance of their roles. They never speak of heroics or derring-do, only about the importance of their comrades, doing the jobs they were trained to do and trying their best to simply stay alive. This was an enormously satisfying, moving and often hilarious tale. After reading these two slim volumes of memoirs by Dahl, I do wish he had written another. Boy and Going Solo are delightful books! Mr. Dahl writes smoothly and true. There is never any confusion for the reader. The sentences tumble from his pen, flowing in harmony across the pages as you see his life unfold. And what an interesting life! Do read it! You'll be happy you did!

I loved these books, and I highly recommend them.Before I read Roald Dahl's autobiographical books, "Boy," and "Going Solo," I thought that he wrote only children's books. What a pleasant surprise !He was a very talented writer who really knew how to tell a fascinating story, with all the wonderful details that keep a reader interested. I only wish he had written a complete autobiography.

Remarkably good WWII memoir. Dahl here is nothing like his kiddie books. "Solo" is tough, honest, and often downright grim. No romanticized WWII ace flyer bunk here!.

We have the printed and Audio versions of this book. Dan stevens does a very good job of narrating. My 9 year olds were at the edge of their seat listening.
