I bought this book for my mother for Christmas. She wanted a picture book about the wine country in CA so she could paint some of the scenes. She had just visited my sister in S.F. and loved every minute of her visit. She LOVES this book. It contains beautiful photographs of Northern California and she looks forward to painting many pictures.

California Wine Country is a most impressive guide.In 1973, I worked in the wine industry and was given the assignment to visit every winery in California of any size. Since then, I haven't been able to duplicate the feat as the number of new and interesting wineries has expanded rapidly.This book focuses on the highest quality winemakers in the Golden State, and gives you both an advance view and a sense of what's there before you visit. With this guide, you will vastly increase your enjoyment of touring wineries and vineyards by being able to pick from among the most interesting sites for you.The photography represents a lot of visits to each area. I doubt if you could capture all of these views, variations in lighting and seasons in less than three years of visits. Even areas I know well I saw differently.The book places about equal attention to the images of vineyards and the exteriors of wineries, many of which are magnificent structures to behold.Mr. Leffingwell is not as talented a writer as he is a photographer. But his prose is more than adequate to extend your knowledge of the industry as he explains about the history of each region and winery. For detailed information on wine making, I suggest you supplement this book with other resources. There is a limited discussion of the process except as applied to super premium reds and whites. There is no mention of how sparkling wines are made.The historical information is a little over focused on religion, Prohibition, the Depression and marketing.I was pleased to see the extensive discussions of the microclimates in each area. Very nice!I was disappointed not to find a better description of the wine qualities at each vineyard. Again, I suggest you supplement this book for that with one of the better wine guides.I hope that Mr. Leffingwell will update this book quite frequently.As a final test of how good this book is, my wife and I visited several of these areas last year around when the book was published. We used another guide, and had a wonderful time. However, if we had had this guide, I think we would have had a much better time . . . because we appear to have missed half of what we would have wanted to see.A final word of caution: Contact the wineries directly to verify times for tours and tastings. The information here was different from what we discovered on site in July 2002 in a few cases.Before you leave this wonderful volume, I suggest you consider where else a preview of what you are going to see adds a great deal to your enjoyment. What about a complimentary appetizer from the chef to whet your palate for what is to come?

This book is obviously intended to be purchased for its beautiful pictures, and does a great job at covering all wine regions in California - not just Sonoma or Napa, but Mendocino and Lake Country down through San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties.If you are looking for a book with some great photos of wineries and vineyards across California, then I can heartily recommend the book. However, some of the text leaves much to be desired, with some obvious omissions and flatly incorrect information. Some examples:On grape varieties: Petite Sirah is identified as being the same as Syrah and Shiraz (it isn't). Pinot Gris and Gewurtztraminer are not mentioned at all, but I would consider them more important than Sylvaner in California white grapes.On locations: Livermore Valley is "to the west in Alameda County", which must surprise people living in the eastern half of the county. Woodside Vineyards in Woodside and Thomas Fogerty Winery in Portola Valley are listed as being in Santa Clara Country (they are in San Mateo County). Morgan Hill and Gilroy are identified as being in Santa Cruz County (they are in Santa Clara County), and there are others too.The choices of wine labels are odd too. In a list of wine labels for a particular geographic area, often the wines come from someplace else. In the Mendocino County section, a wine made from Lodi (in the Central Valley) is listed. The San Francisco Bay section shows labels from three Monterey wines.Despite these faults, the book is definitely interesting - containing many nice photographs, and reasonble listings of wineries with contact information in all parts of California, even fairly obscure ones missed in many books, such as the wineries in Santa Clara, Ventura, Los Angeles, Nevada, and Calaveras counties.

… as Richard Feynman was fond of pointing out, no one UNDERSTANDS quantum mechanics.” The author, John Gribbin, provides this quote, and I found it a most useful one to keep it in mind while reading a book that contains several concepts that are counterintuitive, to say the least.Thanks to a fellow, one-time Amazon reviewer, I was introduced to the writings of John Gribbin, in particular, 13.8: The Quest to Find the True Age of the Universe and the Theory of Everything, a very well-written book on the quest for determining the age of the universe, with the title being its age, followed by a “billion years.”TIME. So many of us only want to “kill” it. Many others wish they could be allocated a double dose, and simply take that which others wish to “kill.” And who amongst us does not relish a fantasy of reversing it… going back in time, and making a particular decision a bit differently?Gribbin takes us to southwestern Italy, in the 5th Century BCE. A Greek, by the name of Zeno. Amazing, considering at the time, most folks were engaged full time in agriculture, eking out a living with the goats, and some wheat, with enough surplus left over to allow a few, like Zeno to ponder the nature of time. He was famous for his paradoxes… like how can a hare ever catch a tortoise if he is running twice as fast, closing half the distance… Zeno claimed that motion is an illusion… an arrow cannot move from one position to another. Time may “point,” but it does not move. Hum. Most people conclude that Zeno produced some pretty word-play. Gribbin suggests giving him “a second look,” since he may very well have been right.Using Zeno as the starting point, Gribbin recaps the history of our understanding of the physical world, naturally featuring Newton, and the “classical laws,” and on to Einstein, relativity and quantum mechanics, those aspects of the physical world that no one can truly understand as Feynman asserted. Maxwell, and the lesser known Boltzmann are also featured. The author states: “The standard understanding of why we perceive a preferred direction of time – the arrow of time – stems from the industrial revolution of the nineteenth century, and in particular the development of steam engines.” Gribbin segues into thermodynamics, entropy, how the world is winding down, entropy, and the impossibility of a broken glass of water to put itself back together… because time has moved “forward.” Or, has it, and is there a slender, very slender possibility that the glass could reconstitute itself? A preposterous idea, on the macro level, far less so, if we consider experimental results on the very, very teeny level, as in the sub-atomic. Time as the 4th dimension. “Time just is,” as Gribbin asserts.The author has inspired me to read two other works, admittedly quite different, that deal with our understanding of time: Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse-Five: A Novel (Modern Library 100 Best Novels) and the astrophysicist Fred Hoyle’s October the First Is Too Late (Valancourt 20th Century Classics). Hoyle was one of the first authors that I have read, way back, in high school.I’ve recently finished Marcel Proust’s rather thorough examination (and search for) that ever so elusive time that has become lost. A unified field theory? Reconcile Proust’s and Gribbin’s views! I don’t think I have enough time left for that project. But with both their guidance, I might be able to tackle the much smaller project of an ill-considered decision in the Ile-de-France, and that on the macro level, the glass does not become reconstituted, the arrow of time points FORWARD, and we can only hope it moves but slowly. For Gribbin’s insights, 5-stars.

Gribbin is spectacular at explaining recondite matters in a way that anyone can understand. He gets into some heady ideas about the physics of time without requiring a single equation. As entertaining as it is enlightening, this is first-rate science writing.

Gribbon's essay is short enough that can be easily digested in a single sitting. It clearly and concisely covers a number of competing theories about the mystery of time. For those reasons I gave the essay four stars.Unfortunately, it appears that the author adheres to the Block Universe model, which holds that the "arrow of time" is an illusion. According to BU model, space-time is likened to a block of cheese, where events are like pieces of string, called world lines, embedded in the cheese. The lengths and positions of the world lines are fixed within the block, so time does not actually unfold ; past, present and future coexist as an unchanging eternity. This implies time is fundamentally reversible, as in LaPlace's clockwork universe where all information regarding the future has already been encoded in the past and present.The fallacy with the BU model is that the total amount of information contained within the "block" must remain constant along the entire "time axis"; however, this is demonstrably false. First, information is equivalent to entropy, and like entropy it cannot be constant. Every physical process is inherently irreversible with an amount of entropy/information that must increase between the cause and effect. Thus, if information were to remain constant according to the BU mode, it would be inconsistent with causality. Second, it has been repeatedly proven by experiments that measurements of quantum states are entirely stochastic; there are no hidden variables that determine what the next quantum state will be. Each observation of a quantum generates a brand-new set of bits of information that simply did not exist prior to making the observation. Furthermore, not only is the future fundamentally unknowable because there is insufficient information available in the present; there is no mechanism that can erase information in the present in order to "go back to the past" when there was less information. Time is unidirectional and there truly is an arrow of time, and it is not just an illusion.

An exquisitely laid out scientific treatise of the true nature of time (no spoilers, but I will say the light came on in my head more than once). But just when the story gets to the heart of the matter, this short book ends. I kept pressing the next page button on my Kindle wondering when the discussion would pick up. Yes, there were conclusions, but those conclusions needed more context - a Q&A, maybe a list of "whatabout..." questions that Mr. Gribbin would answer. Alas, the story just ended with the usual message from Amazon: "You've finished". Perhaps much like time, we shouldn't expect a continuous flow from cause to effect. Still... I think I'll snoop around the internet for a discussion group.

Classic of the genre. Eurodollar derivative pricing, convexity, liquidity and other properties are explained in great detail. I used it daily when working as a fixed income quant.

In my job I trade these products every day and I still learned a lot quickly from this book. The authors are so clear and explain the subject matter so well that most readers will pick it up right away.Most of the information there is a little bit on the older side, but is still valid and a very useful foundation for trading your funding hedges.

This book stands alone as the go-to volume for anyone interested in understanding what Eurodollar futures are, how they came to be, and what they are used for. This should come as no surprise, given that the author had a major hand in the invention of the Eurodollar contract. More abstract issues for professional traders, including convexity, strip valuation, and TED spread arbitrage are also covered, in easy-to-read yet authoritative theoretical terms.Considering the move made by the market from the pits to the screens, the time for another revised edition may be drawing near. Systematic arbitrage of the Eurodollar complex (spreads, packs, bundles, etc.) has never been more available to the sophisticated amateur. If there is any aspect of the market that Mr. Burghardt neglects, it is a thorough treatment of Eurodollar calendar spread arbitrage.

Overall, great reference guide on interest rates. To give some background, I traded equity derivatives for some years, and used interest rate products as a rate hedge (eurodollar futures, IRS, interest rate basis swaps, cross currency basis swaps). I thought I learned enough on the desk to manage my rates/rho exposure, but a friend in treasuries recommended this book and I was not disappointed.The book gives the best treatment to date on convexity adjustment of interest rate futures vs swaps. The illustrations and examples are very practical, I read them a few times and each time I learned something new. The book reminds me of Natenberg Option Volatility & Pricing in terms of its usefulness to professionals and practitioners. Besides convexity adjustments, there's a section on packs / bundles, rates volatility, index arbitrage funding trades (although not quite realistic to today's type of trading). Fair warning, the other sections are not as detailed and could be lengthened with more pertinent examples.I would request a few things that could improve the book, which would be helpful for professionals1. Update a newer version which covers OIS / CSA discounting of interest rate swaps post 2008, as the pricing relationships are not exactly precise to today's models2. Enlarge a section on spreads which have worked in the past or practical examples of some trading strategies

Having just finished reading the author's treatment of bond futures in the 'Treasury Bond Basis,' I was happy to see that Burghardt was updating some of his material from the early 1990s on Eurodollar futures. The 'Bond Basis' was an excellent and thorough analysis, and 'The Eurodollar Futures and Options Handbook' follows the same trend.He provides an excellent overview of the institutional details of Eurodollars and their uses. The book is at its strongest when dealing with issues of the convexity bias and also scores high by not neglecting important issues like the stub period. Perhaps my favorite chapter was on callable bonds and the extension/compression risk, which, while a little misplaced in a book on Eurodollars, still provided a very lucid explanation of the relevant issues.With regard to options, the author touches upon some of the interest strategic combinations using serial and mid-curve options, but I feel that he could've delved a bit deeper in this part of the book. It's the only area in which I felt the book was somewhat lacking.Having said all that, if you're looking to learn about Eurodollar futures, I can't imagine there's a better book out there. This is an excellent compilation of a number of Burghardt's research from the 1990s together with more recent updates. Even if Eurodollars are not your main area of expertise, this book will still help you to gain a more solid understanding of many of the pertinent topics in fixed income.

This is a very practical book with detailed examples to help reader with the basic concept and Eurodollar Futures and Options. Very useful for beginners in this field. The last half of the book is dealing with more advanced topic more suitable for fix incoming researchers.

Great book with very detailed examples on the relationship between different fixed income instruments. My only complaint (and it is a very minor one) is lack of problems at the end of each chapter to help solidify the concepts. Otherwise, an excellent book.

This book was a pleasure to read because it reveals insights into the way the best of the best personal injury attorneys conduct their practice. There were some very specific examples of the cases which altered and directed the tactics needed to obtain justice for their clients. In one instance, recalled by Collin Kennedy, we are able to see the anguish experienced by Kennedy's desire to ensure justice for parents who had lost their child in an accident which could have been prevented. Kennedy describes a late-night trip to Home Depot in order to buy materials to demonstrate how easily and cheaply an apartment swimming pool gate could have been fixed so that this tragedy would never have happened, and how this demonstration led to a just verdict for the distraught family.This is must-read resource for anyone who is considering settling a personal injury case. There just may be some advice which will help to obtain the desired verdict.

It is somewhat of a paradox to write a review of this book - as 'Yes' I'm reviewing this book. I'm also gauging the title - that - as it implies - it is meant as more of an overview than an in-depth study all inclusive study of 'everything' we need and want to know.The other paradox is - our legal system (and insurance industry) is More than flawed! So I find it a challenge to Only review this book - without the conundrums of the binds that many of us 'injured clients' are stuck in.Like - this book encourages us to choose a 'Good Personal Injury Lawyer' - yet the few means suggested are a couple of websites - that Don't offer the Depth of review I Need. I have NOT found a system or way to local and determine If a Lawyer is 'Good' at what they do - AND a person of Integrity. I have hired various types of lawyers over the years - and without some sort of inside information - end up VERY disappointed - and misled by them.On some positive notes - I Do think there is enough invaluable information in here - that for someone who has been injured (Especially Recently!!) - this book is a Must-Read!It is 249 pages - averaging about 20+ pages per the ten lawyers who contributed. There is some restating what the others have said - for example - Many of them say to have the maximum amount of auto insurance (for injuries) and Uninsured Motorist.These lawyers are from around the country. I happen to live in Massachusetts - yet - none of these lawyers are from New England or even New York.Also - more than one - claims that with the 'Contingency Fee' system - 'Everyone' is included. - That is simply Not So!!There are plenty of victimized people out there - who Can't get a lawyer (or at least a good one) to take their claim on Contingency - and they have No financial resources to hire someone. - And - if it's Not an iron-clad - $$ case - the lawyer will simply Not take it - So that is Not true. I only know MY experiences with lawyers.In MY life - I have found 'Bad' ones - and 'Worse' ones.If you (and/or loved one) was injured - I not only encourage you to get/read this book - but do so FAST!!Many issues are time-sensitive.My main issue with both this book - and our (American) legal system - I STILL Don't know how to find a Great lawyer!!This book mentions some websites for rating them - but the information is very shallow and Incomplete.I can go on-line - but everyone is Pushing themselves. - And finding a referral is easy - anyone can recommend theirgolf buddy. - I want to KNOW the track records and experiences of those clients who went before me!!I Still say this is a Must Read - but don't expect it to point you to HOW to find a Great lawyer.**One of My Own pointers - with ANY lawyer; Find out what 'Kind' of lawyer you need - and when calling around NEVER tell them what you need upfront. Ask THEM what THEY specialize in. I've had MANY tell me they are qualified and/or 'Specialize' in whatever I need - just to get my business and Money. : (As this book states - even Within Personal Injury lawyers - some have very specific and focused practices.Make sure you get one - who deals with Your particular needs. - DON'T ask them what they do - have THEM tell you.Thanks, Scott M.

I enjoyed this book for the things we all should know, such as Mr. Kennedy's writing about the influence of social media on cases and new laws coming down the pike about texting while driving. We better listen and learn. Excellent teaching and written so anyone can understand.

I love the Cup of Coffee series of books, I've purchase every single one of them. This book on personal injury attorneys has very valuable content and just about everyone will get some golden nuggets out of it. I recently was involved in an accident where my spine was fractured and broken in 3 places, and all the things involved in recovery and rehabilitation is extremely overwhelming, not to mention the medical bills. After reading this book, it gives you a better sense that there is professional help out there to guide you through the legal issues involved when you've been injured in an accident. I never knew that pretty much all over the US you could get legal help with a personal injury case for free from most personal injury attorneys, they cover the up front costs of the legal fees and get compensated after the case is settled. This book was eye opening to the fact that if we didn't have personal injury attorneys helping to keep product manufacturers in check, there would be a lot more unsafe products on the market causing many people injury or death. Also, injury attorneys help keep people, companies and organizations more accountable for there actions when they cause accidents. Some of the stories of real cases are sad and tragic, and it really makes you think twice about public safety and your personal safety, I know I do now that I'm recovering from a serious personal injury accident. Great go to book.

This trilogy was disappointing to say the least. The dialogue was unrealistic, remedial, while the behavior and thought processes of Avery and other characters simplistic and plain stupid. My mind is honestly boggled by how this project got representation and got published. I have read numerous self published series that are thousands of miles better than this. Although the premise was very promising, the execution verged on painful and was definitely frustrating to read. The story and its structure were extremely lacking while the concept was so promising. All in all this trilogy had an appealing premise but a very weak execution. My question is, how did all these five star ratings and favorable reviews come about!? Are readers standards really so low? I'm honestly shocked to see so many five star reviews.

This series was such a wild ride and I'm sad to see it end! The Ends of the World had some seriously mind blowing plot twists that had me on the edge of my seat, some really great character development, and the writing was amazing as always. I won't get into to much detail as I don't want to spoil anyone but this book was totally unexpected. In a good way of course;)Now while this was still a good and worth the 5 starts I'm giving it, the book it wasn't %100 what I wanted it to be. Like I said it was still good with all its plot twists and character development and great writing but I wasn't totally satisfied with the way a couple things went down in this last addition. That could also just be me because all of the reviews I've read so far are totally positive. This series is totally a 5 star read because it really is an amazing story and Maggie Hall just has a way with writing. This series is 100% worth the read so if your still reading reviews for this series then definitely pick it up!

I came across the first book of the trilogy, A Conspiracy of Us, while perusing for a new book to read wnd downloaded a sample. Then I decided to take a chance and buy it. I'm so glad I did! A whirlwind adventure full of mystery, intrigue, and yea, even a love story, this series is the perfect summer read. It's fast-paced and keeps you hooked until the very end. I loved reading this book from Avery's perspective and seeing how her character changed and grew as various events happened and I especially loved Stellan and Jack. Love triangles can sometimes be cliche but this one is done well and I appreciated how the love triangle isn't the main focus. It's definitely there and prevalent throughout, but it flows well with the story. Overall, I highly highly recommend this trilogy. The Ends of the World was one book I tried to make last because I didn't want to be done with the series so quickly!

I loved this series from the first novel, "A Conspiracy of Us." I was amazed at was a talented writer Maggie Hall was, with that book being her debut novel.Before this book, the final in the trilogy, came out, I glimpsed the Kirkus Review that said, "A millennia-old global conspiracy comes to a climax with all the overwrought personal drama this trilogy has promised." I thought, YES! Bring on the personal drama! And Ms. Hall certainly did. I did not think it was overwrought, though, Kirkus reviewer. It was really fun. The novel took me through a range of emotions. I set aside a whole day just to read it, and I was not disappointed with how I spent my time.

I came across this series by sheer luck while searching for a new story to get sucked into. After reading The Conspiracy of Us, I knew this series would be one of my new favorites! I absolutely adored all the characters and the storyline was new and intriguing to me! When I got finished with the second book I came to love it even more....and then I had to wait for what seemed like forever for this last installment. I was so nervous that things wouldn't end up the way I wanted, but this book was literally everything I dreamed it would be! It was written beautifully, and I'm so happy that I got to be apart of these characters lives for the course of these books! Bottom line is that this book was so worth the read, and if you're looking for a story filled with mystery, romance, and conspiracies, then this is the series for you!

This book is so hectic that the climax was a little anti-climactic. And it was so complicated. Nevertheless, it had a very satisfying ending, and the main character's journey is very believable.

Although I have heard about “water rights” in feature films and old TV westerns I knew precious little about the subject. He has obviously done his due diligence and presents his findings in the thoughtful and informative new book “Where the Water Goes: Life and Death Along the Colorado River”. I simply could not put this one down.It is certainly difficult for the average person to grasp the enormity of these issues without having at least a passing knowledge of the key components of the massive water diversion system that brings all of this water to central Arizona and southern California. In “Where the Water Goes” you will get a crash course in important places like Hoover Dam, Lake Havasu, Parker Dam, the Colorado River Aqueduct, Lake Powell, Imperial Dam, the Salton Sea and the Central Arizona Project and the role that each plays in getting the mission accomplished. You will also be introduced to terminology that will enhance your understanding of the issues involved. And in the final chapter called “What Is to Be Done?” David Owen offers some possible options to ease troublesome water scarcity both in the short run and in the long term.I found “Where the Water Goes: Life and Death Along the Colorado River” to be a real eye-opener that really enhanced my knowledge of these most important issues. At several points along the way I enhanced my reading by viewing some YouTube videos. I would especially recommend a documentary made in the 1930’s called “Colorado River Aqueduct” which really helped me to visualize what was actually going on. “Where the Water Goes” would be an excellent choice for history buffs, those concerned about the environment and general readers alike. Very highly recommended!

Where The Water Goes is ostensibly a driving tour of the Colorado River, from its tributary headwaters to Baja in Mexico where it is supposed to end. Owen drives and describes the scenery and the various characters he meets (sometimes with his family), and fills in the history and significance of the location. But where it gets really interesting is in the legislatures and the courts, where the water has a completely different status.There is real water and there is paper water. There are negotiated agreements and there is The Law Of The River, which seems to be whatever the legislator or lawyer talking wants it to be. And you don’t want to bring The Law Of The River to court. The book is most informative when paper water properties rear their heads. It’s not logical, intuitive, direct, simple, or efficient. And no one dares tamper with it lest the whole house of cards come tumbling down.In Arizona, new developments can be built and sold without service or access to water. Owners have to go pick it up and bring it back as needed. In Colorado, the water that runs off your roof is not yours and you have no right to retain it. At the state level, there is a race to consume the allocation, lest it be reduced and grabbed by another state. And by the time the river gets to Mexico, there is literally nothing left. In the mean time, agriculture still flood-irrigates, and cities keep expanding. Deserts don’t mean no one can live or farm; they just have to divert more water. Incredibly, the locals argue about exporting agricultural products as if they were exporting the water in them. It’s all very Alice in Wonderland.The whole arrangement was originally built on faulty data; the river system cannot produce what it says on paper. The big reservoirs are so low they constantly need to retain all the water they can, leaving little or nothing trickling down the system. Canals and other diversions pervert nature. Dams cause more problems than they solve. Worst of all is the first come first served arrangement, whereby those who have the oldest permits get all the water they’re allowed before newer participants can take any. In perpetuity. This is how the West was built.None of this is news and Owen cites numerous predecessors in trying to explain it (but not rationalize it. No one can do that). Owen ends by making recommendations he knows full well no one will ever consider. It’s a remarkable trip.David Wineberg

I am one of those silver hairs that live on the Colorado. This book gave me a lot of insight and knowledge about the Colorado from start to finish and also a detailed understanding about western water law. I have read other books about specific aspects of the Colorado river system, such as the Hoover and Glen Canyon dams, but this book gives a different perspective, focusing on the water itself, and is very worthwhile. I would have liked to read more about Wyoming tributaries and dams, such as the Green River and Flaming Gorge dam, but I will have to do that elsewhere. I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested In a fairly complete story of the Colorado River.

I am giving this 5 stars for information, as I am headed to Lake Powell/Grand Staircase this April and wanted to learn more about the region and the Colorado. However, I just finished the Emerald Mile, which was a breathtaking account that included some of the same issues with a wooden dory speed record through the Grand Canyon thrown in. I give this book three stars for reading like a 300-page newspaper article. Yes, I know you have to cover water law in a book such as this, but . . . Oy. Also surprised no maps or photos, at least in the Kindle version.

My book club just added this book to our yearly list. A readable on water, waste and need. Two Colorado Rivers, this one along the West coast. Building of Boulder (Hoover) Dam, the use of water as well as how farming in the desert may not be the smartest thing we humans have done. Also talks about how the measures taken to conserve actually allow for more building and farming.
