This book is split into roughly 3 batches of material:1. Donut and chicken recipes2. History of Federal Donuts, the restaurant3. Humorous diversions related to the above two points.I think it's important to emphasize that those three chunks are there, just so you're not confused when you get a piece you're not expecting. I'll describe my rating for each of the individual batches above and provide a bit of commentary.1. Donut and Chicken recipes - 5/5 starsThe recipes are delicious and attainable in a home kitchen. My wife pulled off excellent "hot and fresh" style sugar donut and one of the "fancy style" donuts, the Mighty Quinn (a chocolate and vanilla glaze), using just the recipes in the book. The recipe doesn't quite produce the exact donuts that you can get at the restaurant because the addition of flour to the exterior can lead to some uneven cooking. At the restaurant they have the donut robot to ensure even cooking. Still, excellent translation to the home kitchen. At the time of this writing we have not tried any of the chicken recipes but that doesn't detract from my rating at all.2. History of Federal Donuts, the restaurant - 4/5 starsIt was fun to hear the backstory as a regular customer of Federal (and Dizengoff) and former Philadelphia resident, but I can see this batch of material being somewhat uninteresting to people who haven't lived there. There's a good amount of swearing in this batch of material, which felt a little bit forced at times.3. Humorous diversions - 4/5These diversions were funny, but may not be interesting for people just here for the recipes. There's a humorous creative fiction piece from the point of view of the donut robot, and some excellent bad Yelp reviews of the restaurant.
If you want to relax with a fun filled, don't take yourself too seriously type book, this is it.. But truth be told, these are some very serious food people who have given a tremendous gift to Philadelphia. I loved Eating at Zahav, I love eating at Federal Donuts, but most of all, I love what they have created and given all of us. Read this book to get a much needed break from all the political crap overwhelming us everywhere we turn. For a short while, just have fun. You need this book.
I live in Philly and have been to Federal Donuts a few times. I enjoyed the story about how it came about and was very excited to try the chicken recipe. It came out great and everyone loved it. I’m looking forward to trying the donut recipes as well. There is a smidge of middle eastern spice that you’ll probably have to order but a source is provided.
There is no cake donut recipes! Save your self some money if you were looking to find some tasty recipes based on cake. Its just full of funny stories! One master recipe of dough! I repeat dough and not their famous cake batter.
