This is a must read for teen boys. And buy one for your youth minister too. I bought this book and put it where my 16 year old son would see it. This morning I noticed the book had "moved." He read parts 2 and 3, without me even asking, in one night! Yes, he skipped straight to the section on girls, and that's fine, because he got truth-bombed with all sorts of wisdom, and he liked it. This is a no-brainer for any parent who desires for their teen (or young adult) man-child to receive godly training in crucial areas of life. Thank you Barrett Johnson!!!! I'm buying another one for our youth minister right now.
The Young Man's Guide to Awesomeness: How to Guard Your Heart, Get the Girl and Save the World is a book I've been looking for for years. Barrett Johnson has written a guide for Christian teen boys outlining, in a direct and serious tone leavened with a healthy dose of humor, the challenges they face in their relationships and attempts to succeed in life and how to overcome those challenges.The three major sections of the book cover How to Guard Your Heart, How to Get the Girl, and How to Save the World. Within each section, chapters outline different areas of focus. In each chapter, the topic is explored within several subsections. A pithy Big Idea gives a piece of advice. A body part is highlighted along with an explanation of how that body part affects this topic. Typical responses or situations are described. Advice is given for how to respond differently than the norm. A related lesson from the life of the biblical king David provides an example. The Take Action subsection gives a short list of concrete steps to take. Talk About It has discussion questions, and there's a QR code that links to a video.Johnson's advice and admonitions here are direct and earnest but not overly explicit. Sex is discussed quite a bit, but in an appropriately tactful way. The humor in the book will appeal to older pre-teen and teen boys but isn't crass.
So, I'm the mom who bought this book for my four mancubs. I started to peek inside to scan for "content" and immediately recognized that I was on sacred, man ground and closed the book. So far, my two oldest boys have devoured this book and have even come up with their own weird language about their discoveries. I plan on saving this one for a couple of years until the two younger cubs are ready to partake of all things manly. So thankful for this book, for the time my hubs has taken to guide our dudes through it and the relief that I do not have to know everything to appreciate my sons and their epic battle through this harrowing world.
Page 3 "most guys are morons." What?!?!?? I'm going to give this to my son? Why would I do that? No, NOT most guys are morons. My husband is not a moron. My sons are not morons. My father is not a moron. Yes, people do moronic things sometimes, but that doesn't make "most guys" morons. What a horrible thing to teach our young sons. Maybe I read it wrong??? I returned this book. Unusable to my family.
My 14 year old son read this book in 1 night! The next day he told me how much it had helped him. He had even underlined in it!! Hal and Melanie Young are AMAZING guides to Christian Parenting. I love how this book had a "Parental Advisory Warning". The hold NO punches when discussing porn and it's affects, the internet and it's dangers, and how to approach relationships with girls. Mom, do not interfere with the book. Just give it to him to read. I think it is appropriate for those 12 and up.
This has been an amazing book for my son and husband to go through and is presented in such a way that I (mom) can extract subject matter from the book and apply it to daily life along with my husband. In reverse the book is so relevant to today's moral issues and challenges that I have used the material to bring awareness to my teenage daughter as well.We will recommend this book to my son's small group. Thank you!
Must READBest book I’ve found that is relevant for today’s tween. My son is totally engaged while we read it. He’s grown up reading all the Dobson recommended books for each age, and this just tops anything I’ve found for this age group. I only wish there was a girl version as well for my daughter. Even still, I’m going over parts of this book with her also.
