Review

“The legend is chilling—and the terror builds on every page. This book gave ME nightmares!” (R. L. Stine, New York Times bestselling author of the Goosebumps and Fear Street series)★ “An incredibly scary story that will make hearts beat and brows sweat.” (School Library Journal (starred review))“Bruchac vigorously cranks up the suspense, and pits a ghastly creature against a resourceful young heroine who draws both on courage and cultural tradition. A natural for under-the-blanket reading.” (Kirkus)“Bruchac gives full play to his talent for the creepy, and the introduction of bits of American Indian lore and story are smoothly and capably integrated. Reluctant as well as eager readers will relish this fast-paced supernatural chase.” (Bulletin for the Center for Children's Books)“Although it’s steeped in Mohawk lore and tradition, Bruchac’s story is contemporary both in its setting and its celebration of the enduring strength and courage of Native American women.” (ALA Booklist)“The mix of traditional and contemporary cultural references adds to the story’s haunting appeal, and the quick pace and suspence will likely hold the interest of young readers.” (Publishers Weekly)

I was looking for info on Mohawk indian myths when I stumbled onto this middle-grade story featuring a young heroine who is Mohawk, and finds herself encountering a frightening character from tribal mythology. This was a fun, refreshing read. The young heroine lives in the modern world, goes to school, her father works at a bank, her mother does aerobics: in other words, the story does not dwell on her indian heritage. Yet the plot does bring that element in, in a way that makes the story fun and also gives us a main character that anyone can relate to. I enjoyed it very much!

I remember reading the skeleton man myth (or something very similar) when I was a child. The chilling memory of the myth stayed with me for 25+ years and was immediately recognizable in this story by Joseph Bruchac. He has done a masterful job of intertwining the myth and modern story, giving the novel a depth that is unusual for children's literature. Perhaps this is what makes the story so scary--the sense of believability that he manages to create. For those who have read Coraline, you will find the plot lines similar. However, as much as I like Gaiman's work, his version lacks the underlying background to give his story the level of depth and reality found in Skeleton Man. Perhaps children with weaker stomachs would find Coraline to be a gentler scare.

Creepy, book, but this is the book that got my daughter reading, so I am grateful for that. I just wish it had been something not so dark.

perfect!

I have chosen to give this book 5 stars because its wonderfully told and keeps you at the edge of your seat the whole time. I would recommend this book for teens who like mysteries, also some I Native American folklore.
