It has most of everything, but lacks many intricate details that should be included in many parts of the car, and ways of assembly and disassembly. It does not show enough pictures of actual parts on many things, it just talks about them, and assumes you know what they are and what to look for. The layout and everything would be great if it just had more details. This book covers too many car years and should instead have made separate books for different years and details specific to those cars, since they are vastly different in many detailing ways as far as parts. I used this book, but many times had to resort to other means to find answers for what I was looking for. There are many simple little things that should be in this repair manual, but are not in it. A reference guide to the head light bulb, for instance, is nowhere to be found. I would get this only because it's the only thing available for us, but don't expect to find everything. It seems the author deliberately left out many things in order to keep BMW service in business. Many times it says to "leave it up to a qualified BMW mechanic or dealer", not in those words, but basically.
This book tells you everything that you need to know to perform just about any BMW repair on an E34 Series with the exception of engine replacement or transmission replacement. This book covers just about every component of the vehicle (electrical and mechanical) and the book is easy to undersand.If you have just a basic knowledge of cars, then you will understand this manual in no time. Even if you have NO knowledge of cars, you can still understand how to maintain the E34 Series and you will be able to discuss problems more intelligently with a mechanic. I use this book to maintain my own E34 series BMW and it was well worth the $56 because it has saved me thousands of dollars in repairs bills.
I use a Bentley manual to keep my VW Jetta on the road, and this book has been a life-saver. I was pleasantly surprised to find a reasonably priced hardcover for the BMW I recently acquired. This is THE go-to-book for any mechanic, shade-tree or professional. Excellent index and table of context, clear diagrams, good paper quality, good quality images and photographs. The one complaint I have on the 5 Series manual, is that while it had very detailed instructions on engine maintenance and removal and even work on the valve train, there were no diagrams or illustrations of the entire motor out of the engine-bay, which would be helpful for those of us not familiar with this engine.
Bentley Service Manuals are the best you can buy short of a very expensive Factory Manual. They are far superior to a Haynes or Chilton manual and, in some ways, better than a Factory Manual as they are much easier to read. I really like that this manual is available with a Hard Cover - much better for the workshop environment! I only wish Bentley covered more brands and models, especially rotary powered Mazdas and BMW M series...
I consider the Bentley guides to my various BMWs an essential tool. They are thorough, straightforward, accurate, and complete from basic to a very high technical level. Even if you don't do your own repair work on your car, they will educate you as to what the problem most likely is, what the repair entails, and help you understand what your tech is doing. Most highly recommended!
Awesome book. I use it everytime I need to do work on my 1990 535i manual transmission car (220k miles). Used it to overhaul the entire suspension myself (struts and springs). Served great and I am absolutely NOT a trained professional mechanic in anyway. Remember, always use a torque wrench. Gave it 1 star because I am an engineer and it is not a tech-publication :-) . It is a Service Manual.
My biggest problem with this book was that it doesn't inform you you'll have the jack the engine up to get the oil pan off. Spent 4 days figuring it all out on my own. I think I got better info and instructions off of bmw forums. Also gave me the wrong torque lbs and cause me to break a bolt off on the oil pan
