Review

Kanefield (The Girl from the Tar Paper School) derives from mixed sources an informative, simply written account of the impressive arc of Ginsburg's life. She begins with Ginsburg's humble beginnings as the daughter of a Russian Jewish immigrant who struggled to make a go in New York City's garment business. From an early age, she demonstrated the intelligence and diligence that became her hallmark as the second woman ever on the Supreme Court. Kanefield makes accessible to laypersons the legal arguments at the heart of many of Ginsburg's cases, including the gender discrimination Ginsburg attacked when she was a practicing attorney. The justice's personal life gets appropriate attention, especially her warm and mutually supportive relationship with her late husband, Marty. Despite the book's positive tone, this is not a hagiography; Kanefield does include quotes from those critical of Ginsburg. Those who have followed Ginsburg's career and jurisprudence will not find anything new here, but most readers will emerge with a great deal of respect for a fiercely independent woman who battled sexism to reach the pinnacle of her profession.--PUBLISHER'S WEEKLYFrom the Book Bloggers:"What an amazing book! At times i got goose bumps reading this book about one of the most fascinating woman of our era. I grew up in the 60's and was intimately involved in the women's rights movement as my mother was determined to see the ERA pass. The method by which a VERY patient Ruth went about affecting change - not just for women but for all genders - was very impressive. i always thought of her as a liberal but to be honest - she is a constitutionalist who believes that our founding fathers meant for the constitution to be interpreted over the years to fit the times. She was a champion for men and women's rights - rights of people, not gender driven and she went about her beliefs in a most interesting manner. I highly recommend this book no matter what side of the political fence you are on.

This is a great book for anyone who wants to understand how far Womens' rights have come in this country and yet how far we still need to come to be truly equal. It is also a great love story on how Ruth and Marty, her husband, believed in each other, supported it each and truly allowed each to be the person they needed to be with love and compassion. The book is also a testament to a great woman who has used her brilliance and articulate voice and writing to make our country a better place for women to live.

The author humanized Justice Ginsburg by intertwining her remarkable relationship with her husband for fifty-six years, and the gentle, but important, compromises they made to accommodate one another's careers and temperament. The relationship with her children an colleagues brings this forward as well. The span of time covered by this book is an astonishing education about the changes in the station of women in the United States within the relatively short period of the lives of some who will read it, including me.

How could I like this book, I'm a Republican conservative. Ruth Bader Ginsburg has had a most interesting journey throughout her career. As a young lady she was beautiful and smart and somewhat audacious and very ambitious. What she has accomplished amazes me. This biography will give you an appreciation for her contributions to the laws which govern our modern day society.Oh, that we had a Republican Judge with her genius talent and commitment to principles.

I would say this is almost a must read for high school students. She has fought diligently for gender equality and while reading this book you will undoubtedly be surprised by some of the prejudices and inequality treatment of people, both men and women, but of course, still more often women. For example, did you know that most health insurance companies would refuse to insure a pregnant woman and that companies would fire women when they learned that a woman was pregnant. It is a well written book and she is and has been an admirable judge and I hope she will manage to stay on the Supreme Court during these trying next 4 years.

What a truly great woman. She still have the determination and the brilliant thinking that marked her life and career. A must read for any woman who cares about the predecessors who paved the way for women's rights and the tenacity with which she did so.. May she live long enough to continue her position on the Supreme Court. Bravo Ruth.

This book was so enlightening and educational regarding the amount of work and influence Ruth Bader Ginsburg had on the laws of equality. A very hard working women with ideas and challenges that belonged to only her. I recommend this book especially for women interested in the law.

This biography covers the life of Ruth Bader Ginsburg from birth to the present. Her life as a brilliant, driven, fair, humerous, insightful woman in presented from carefully researched sources and presented in a readable and fascinating book that brings Constitutional history alive.
